Thinking and Writing in Academic Contexts - A University Companion

This is a user-friendly handbook that will help students improve their academic writing in English and understand the expectations university instructors have when they assess students’ texts. The book offers various approaches to use in the planning, writing, and revision phases of assignments so that writers can proceed with more confidence than they previously had. Every chapter in the book features an “Ask the Tutor” section in which typical challenges are described and advice is given. Readers will find suggestions for organizing ideas into well-developed paragraphs and essays and for correcting very common language problems—including some typical “Swenglish” constructions—so that sentences are not only writ-ten in standard English but also gain clarity. In addition, writers will find descriptions of routines that are valuable to use when checking and proofreading academic texts. This handbook was primarily written for undergraduate students in Sweden who need to write essays and research papers for their courses in English. It can also serve as a useful companion for master’s-level students who want to show greater competence when they write academic papers in English.
